Dear Tai,
It wil be great to see you! Social customs in Perú are completely diferent from your country. A different country, a different life. That is something that you have to always remember when you come here. So I thought of making a list of certain cultural differences that you will encounter in Peru:
In terms of greetings, people will shake hands upon meeting for the first time. When you get to know each other better, men will often pat each other on the back and women will kiss each other on one cheek.
Peruvians and Latin Americans in general tend to have a much smaller “personal space”. In other words, when standing near other people in conversation or a crowd, they tend to stand much closer than you may be comfortable with.
When they are communicating often make hand gestures and the conversation can become very lively and animated, if the person really gets into something. People will stand close to each other and maintain strong eye contact.
Peruvians rarely tip in restaurants, there is no rule that says you can’t if you’re pleased with the service, and it will be very much appreciated.
See you soon, I hope you can enjoy your trip.
