Wherever we go we always are going to see English words like: open, fast food, internet, e-mail. And this is because the English is influencing in our lives in a big way but some of us don’t want to realize it. Nowadays there is global revolution because there’re many people that are against the use of English; however, many think that the future status of English as the global language is assured because of the importance that English have in our lives. Here are some reasons that probe that English is and is going to continue being the most important language around the world: the existence of many English speakers and the immersion in local culture .
First, many people think that in the next years the most important languages would be the Mandarin Chinese because it has more native speakers than English. Although, the number of people speaking English is the one of the largest in all languages and continues to be increasing. The trend which people want to use English has been increased. For example, nowadays the people speaking as first and second language are calculated as around 700 million. Although this population is inferior to that of China, which is known 1.2 billion, according to The Economist (1999)¹ estimates that 1.5 billion can use English. Therefore, this trend wills strength the status of English as global language.
Secondly, according to Downie² the use of English is a disrespect for his language that is the Portuguese, also he said that people feel humiliate and offended by having to pronounce words in a language that is not theirs. But Downie don’t want to realize that English culture has been immersed in a fact of life in many countries. For example, much information on the Internet is written in English. In other words, using English contributes to access to the huge knowledge and I’m sure that everybody wants to belong to it.
To sum up, even though there are people that are against the use of the English, I think that the status of English as the global language is assured because of the big influence that it has in our lifes and also that if we want to develop better professionally we need to learn the English which is the world language.
