THE FUTURE STATUS OF ENGLISH AS THE GLOBAL LANGUAGE IS ASSURED
English is everywhere.Some 380 million people speak it as their first language and perhaps two-thirds as many again as their second.A billion are learning it about a third of the world·s population are in some sense exposed to it.English is the language of computers and the internet.You will see it in advertisement,you·ll hear it in pop songs,you·ll read it in official documents .However, in recent years there has been mon-English sites growing.In parts of Asia business are woking beyond English because they consider that Mandarin might be the new "must learn" language.Although English be replaced by Mandarin in the next decade, i believe that it will remain as a strong second language.
Some people feel that English is taking over , they feel humiliated and offended by having to pronounce words in a languaje that is not theirs.But they are obligated because shop owners or other people want to exibit a false knowledge .They can·t conmunicate fluently because of the abuse of foreign expressions in their language.Nevertheless, linguistic experts state that English is a language of subtlety and profitable business.It·s now widely spoken in so many places .Likewise ,it no longer seen as likely to become dominant around the world.
Opponents also say that the future of English as the universal languaje is not assured .According to Graddol,in parts of Asia business are looking beyand English because they consider that Mandarin might be the new "must learn " language .For instance, in the early years of the internet it was dominated by sites in English ,but in recent years there has been non-English sites growing , specially Spanish German ,french,Japanese,and others .However,English is a language of globalization of international business and diplomacy.It·s the language of computers and the internet .Furthemore,about 350 million people speak English as their first language (Crystal par.3).
The final argument advanced by opponents is that English invades and replaces native languages from several countries which is really bad because native people don·t want to speak their own language they prefer English .They think it sounds more chic;English really invades and changes native languages.On the contrary, others feel that English has become a profitable business in their countries .
In brief, the world faces a future of people speaking more than one language, with English no langer seen as likely to become dominant although it might be replaced by Mandarin in the next decade .Nevertheless,English will always remain like one of the most important languages for the foreseeable future.
