THE FUTURE STATUS OF ENGLISH IS NOT ASSURED

 

 

           For more a decade, English was claimed to be the first language around the world, so this language have became very popular, and many people started to study it for many reasons. However, a last poll confirmed that 79 percent of the population does not consider that in the future English will be a global language. It was estimated that around the world 458 millions of people speak English, but in today lives people decide to speak other languages; for instance, Chino mandarin, French, Spanish, etc; so the popularity of this language is falling. Although English seems to be in an unassailable position in the modern world, its future as a global language is not necessarily assured for many reasons.

 

           Opponents in favor of English as a first language claim that speak English open the doors to success, and help people to find new opportunities in job. However, this research is inconclusive. Despite the fact that the research does not show a proof, other research show exactly the opposite result. For example, United State had 30 millions of immigrants which 25 millions of people could speak English in 1999, but in recent years only 23 million of immigrants live there, and only 18 millions of those immigrants can speak English; those people are returning little by little to their towns because United State do not have a good economy, so people are looking for other new countries and give them the stability that they really need. So people started to study other language.

 

           Opponents also maintain that the growth of the internet make English become more popular because of programs that were created in English are to help people to be informed about many kinds of things or find information about something. However, in these years, people can find a lot of information in many languages. It does not manner if you speak English, or there are many interesting programs that are not made in English. This means that people do not need English to be informed.

 

           The final argument advanced by opponents in favor of English as a first language is that this language can not change their status because they say that English is in everywhere, people see English in products (ace), in restaurants and people use English to communicate by e-mail. However, research supports exactly the opposite, Deputy Aldo Rebelo said that is time to use our own language to communicate because they mix the languages causing a lot of troubles to understand the real language. So nowadays, people use their native language, products that are made in each country, and give others new opportunities in job. As a consequence, in the future the industries will name products, restaurants, etc by people's native language.

 

           It should be evident that the arguments that claim English will be a global language are not valid. On the contrary, many experts say that the future status of English is not assured. This language is not popular because of the stated arguments that can prove that English is losing its importance, and its value  in the society. The only thing that people have to do is to wait until people decide which language will be the global language around the world.
