THE CERTAIN FUTURE OF ENGLISH
Nowadays the use and importance of English as a universal language has increased hugely in many countries because it allows many people around the world know the different kinds of cultures that exist and communicate each other when they do not speak, read, write and understand another's person language. However, there are some people who doubt of English's future en next years and are against that it becomes a global language because they feel they are losing their native languages; besides they say that most websites on the internet are not only in English lately, but also in other demanding languages and the last in the next decades Mandarin will the popular language. Even though, those people oppose the future of status of English as a global language is assured, I believe that they are wrong because they do not see the advantages that English has.
Opponents of the certain future of English say that they do not consider and accept English as a dominant language in the coming years, on the contrary, they have a strong desire to change it because they think if they adopt English as a universal language, there would be some people who may stop using less their native languages such as Quechua, Aymara and others here in Peru, for example. In contrast, I believe those people should not react in that way, they should see the upsides of English as a global language instead of the downsides; for instance, it helps to achieve professional new opportunities, to get degree from the university since English is an indispensible requisite, to do some cultural exchange which helps to meet people from different cultures and share customs with them and other benefits. Regardless of native languages, it is important that parents teach their children the importance of keeping and valuing their roots since they are part of them.
The second argument by opponents of the certain future of English says that nowadays the amount of websites in English is less as in the past since according to a researcher, "In the early years of the Internet, it was dominated by sites in English, but in recent years there has been a proliferation of non-English sites, especially Spanish, German, French, Japanese and others (Montgomery). Nonetheless, I surely believe that information is not valid and English will continue being the predominant language of internet, so most of us know and notice that each time when we go on internet to research something, read an article to be up date there are more and more websites and articles in English since it has become the most useful and understanding languages for the writers and readers.
The final argument by opponents of the certain future of English as a global language says that in the next decades English will not continue being the most popular language, so Mandarin will be the new language that many people are going to learn (Graddol). On the other hand, according to a research, "English is one of the most widely spoken and written languages worldwide with 380 million native speakers and now it is the most widely learned second language since it is estimated that over 1 billion people are currently learning English, for international business, travel and communication ("English"). Therefore, that point of view is not cogent argument.
We can see with these examples that the arguments against of the future status of English as a global language is assured are not reasonable, in comparison I personally think that English will become a global language in the future since nowadays more and more people are interested in learning it because it the most easiest languages to learn and help them to achieve their personal goals.

I liked your essay because the arguments that you mention are really clear. I guess you used a point by point organization wich made your essay understandable. The arguments that you mention are: In the future english will be necessary because it is an indespensable requisite for cultural exchange, the university and to meet people of other cultures . The other argument is that English is going to be the predominant language in the future because most websites pages are in english, so it is important the use of this language. The final argument is that english is one of the most spoken and written languages in the world, so its future is assured. On the other hand, the opponents arguments are:First af all, They say that the use of English could make people reduce the use of other languages. The other is that nowadays the webpages in English are less than in the past. Finally, they say that the future language will be Mandarin. Well, taking about your position I think that your strongest and most convicing argumet is that English will be necessary because of the universities, cultural exchange and to meet people since it is an international language. I understood all your essay because of your examples and quotations. I really liked it. However, it could be a good idea if you could make a surprising intriduction in order to make your essay more interesting :).

ReplyDeleteHey Milagros, consider revising the sentences used in your essay. Some are too long, and some common sentence problems can be found.
