CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF PROCRASTINATION ON STUDENTS
Almost all students have procrastinated at least once in their lifetime. They either kept on doing their homework until the end of the day or they have done their homework quickly with no revisions on their due date. These are some kind of actions which make students give in to the temptation of procrastination. For that, most of the time students regret about the accumulation of their homework since they do not realize that their homework does not take a few minutes to finish, and then it becomes an unpleasant task to complete. Therefore, the majority of students who are putting off their things should know the causes and be aware of the negative effects that procrastination has on them.
Disorganization is one of the main causes of procrastination, especially between students. According to Linda Solomon, a psychologist of the University of Vermont, "Most students who procrastinate tend to do the easiest task first, regardless of whether they are urgent or not. However, more urgent or difficult tasks begin to pile up as they are put off." For that, pupils must do the urgent or important task first, and the current or uncomplicated homework can be put aside to focus the attention on the difficult one. If the task cannot be made at all at once because it is quite complex, then it can be subdivided to avoid any kind of trouble at the moment of doing it. Unfortunately, many students do not admit that due to the lack of organization in their activities, they have to deal with procrastination.
The other main cause of procrastination among students is fear of failure since pupils who are driven by this sort of fear usually use avoidance and have an intense desire to delay performing a task or simply wait for its deadline, so they no longer have to deal with it. These students sometimes use expressions such as "If I try, then I will only fail.", "I knew I was going to fail, so what is the importance of starting work on the next assignment?" and so on. They say that because they prefer to postpone doing their things instead of overcoming the fear. According to Esther Pothblum, the author of a test called the Procrastination Assessment, "Fear of failure is usually manifested as performance of anxiety, lack of self-confidence and perfectionism."
As a consequence of bad or poor organization and fear of failure, students who procrastinate obviously have to confront and deal with the negative effects which make their life worse.
Procrastination carries many consequences; for example, if students start to postpone, their homework gets increased and eventually they have an accumulating homework; in addition, they suffer from terrible drop of grades. Procrastinating students also tend to be distracted quickly, for they rather want to do easier tasks than finishing tedious ones that they are assigned to do. For last, stress is another downside from procrastination because if students do not learn to manage stress, it may lead to depression, frustration and other mental issues which will make their lives much harder to cope with.
To sum up, students need to be careful about procrastination since it is dangerous and harmful to their life school, and they should make something important about their piled up homework and get in to the good habit of completing their work every day like a strict routine, so they will not have any kind of negative consequences as accumulation of homework, becoming distracted and the stress. Therefore, pupils should remember that because they avoid finishing a task today, it does not mean that their homework will not need to be done tomorrow.
Description of my writing:
Well, the kind of organization I used was CAUSE / EFFECT ESSAY because of the topic I chose, it was easier for me to use this sort of essay organization since I could discuss the causes (reasons) and the effects (results) of procrastination. Lastly, the pattern of my essay is the following:
INTRODUCCTION
1st Cause
2nd Cause
Transition Paragraph
Effects
CONCLUSION
i HOPE YOU LIKE MY ESSAY! :-)
Well, i decided to talk about Causes and Effects of Procrastination on Students because i think it is an interesting topic, so nowadays most pupils do not realize about the negative consequences it has on their lives. I did all my best to do it and i hope i could help some students to be aware of that problem.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry for the mistakes, I was in a hurry and i did not noticed about them :-)
ReplyDeleteI really find your essay very interesting. I truly like the manner you divided it into the paragraphs you wrote and the ideas and opinions you used to support your ideas. It’s always important to back up your thoughts with what experts in the subject have to say about it. To me, your essay intends to convince the reader not to procrastinate anything and the ideas and instances you used contribute to understanding that your point was that, wasn’t it? Regarding your thesis statement, I would suggest directing it a little bit more to have it more focused to what you want to express through the other paragraphs; by this I mean that being aware and knowing causes and effects might not convince a procrastinator to stop putting things off. Perhaps, something more convincing like procrastination can lead you to failure, or procrastination can be extremely stressful or harmful, or what have you. In general terms your essays looks, in a way, convincing, but it could be enhanced so that it is even more persuasive.
